About this product

Product Information

Angela's Ashes , imbued on every page with Frank McCourt's astounding humor and compassion, is a glorious book that bears all the marks of a classic. "When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank's mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank's father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy -- exasperating, irresponsible and beguiling-- does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Frank lives for his father's tales of Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and of the Angel on the Seventh Step, who brings his mother babies. Perhaps it is story that accounts for Frank's survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig's head for Christmas dinner and gathering coal from the roadside to light a fire, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors--yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness.

  • Informative Book for Beginning Artisits

Life Drawing is an excellent source to learn figure drawing. The book offers a great deal of useful data that can help artists develop a unique style to draw portraits. There are a few minor flaws in the book, the emphasis on only a select few mediums (charcoal and new pastel only) and the lack of specific information, like how to draw specific body parts, for example. Overall, its a great buy.

  • This is a wonderful book of about an Irish American.

This book has helped me to understand a lot of why my childhood was the way it was. The book was recommended to me by my sister. I can see the similarities that Francis McCourt and we faced growing up. Our fathers loved the drink, our moms went near crazy to put food on the table and we children were practically left alone to raise ourselves. The Irish humor in times of troubles is wonderful and I think any Irish/American who has had to work as long as they remember will enjoy the read.

  • An Amazing Story of an Ordinary Man

I have no idea how many times I've read this book, but if you quote a line, I can tell you where in the story it came from. This is an amazing read. Its honest without being "fluffy" or angry. What strikes me every time I read this book is the casual cruelty and thoughtless neglect of Frank McCourt's father and the love and admiration of the son. At one point, Frank goes to visit the father he hasn't seen in a decade. His father asks how the other members of the family are, although he can't recall the name of his youngest son. This is the most poignant set of phrases I've ever read and Frank McCourt finds no need to expound upon his feelings. What an amazing painter of words this author is! I also have this book in the recorded version and recommend it highly for long car trips!

  • Angela's ashes

Wonderful read, compelling stories of life in Limerick during Frank McCourt's childhood and beyond. Couldn't put this book down, even though I have read this book twice before, each time I read it I get something different from it !

  • Among my Top 5 Picks of All Time

I'm no professional or even a wanna-be-professional book reviewer, but I can tell you that this is definitely one of my all-time favorite books. It's tragic and hilarious at the same time, if you can believe that. Anyone who has been raised in the Catholic faith will get an extra special kick out of it. I just LOVE it and I can recommend it with no doubt that you will too.
