Great Book, Great Author
Shoot the Moon captures the essence of small town America, particularly that of the southern states, and the citizens that inhabit it. It is the story of an upscale veterinarian from California that jets off to Oklahoma, after his parents death and the realization that he has been adopted, in search of his birth mother. What he encounters is more than he bargained for, it was not the simple task he assumed it would be, as his birth mother had been murdered when he was an infant. With the realization that he had been presumed dead all these years, he sets out looking for answers. Answers to the questions that he now had and so many in DeClare, Oklahoma had been asking since the night he went missing and his mother was murdered. While looking he finds a community that has not forgotten him ... Shoot the Moon captures the essence of small town America, particularly that of the southern states, and the citizens that inhabit it. He is very resistant to embrace these people, his family, that still calls him Nicky Jack. What he is shown is warmth and immediate acceptance, well except from those that don’t want him to find the truth. In the end not only does he discover the answers he was searching for, but himself. If you would like a look into what small town America is about, what makes it appealing to those of us that live it, pick up Shoot the Moon. Personally I feel it is the embodiment of small town America, well except for the murder, cover up, shootings and such, that doesn’t happen, well a lot anyway. If you are not familiar with Billie Letts, I would also highly recommend Where the Heart Is and Honk and Holler Opening Soon, she has yet to disappoint me.

A quick and easy read with crazy smalltown characters and quick twists and turns. Billie Letts writes a simple novel of mystery, murder and finding true happiness. Shoot the Moon takes place in DeClare, Oklahoma and involves the terrifying murder of Gaylene Harjo, a young beautiful mother. What's even more terrifying is that her baby, Nicky Jack disappeared that same night she was murdered in 1972. Nicky Jack's pajama bottoms were found on the banks of Willow Creek and the townspeople of DeClare assumed him to be dead as well. Fast forward 30 years and Nicky Jack returns to DeClare, he shocks, struts and begins to unravel the mystery of his mother's brutal murder. We learn the true story of Gaylene through her journal,her family and her friends. The true killer is exposed but enough red ... The enjoyment of reading Billie Lett's novel is that it is very serious subject matter with light-hearted humor and grace. We know redemption and justice will prevail while all becomes right again in DeClare, Oklahoma's piece of the world. After you turn the last page,you may quickly forget the details of this story and move on to another story but the haunting image of a motherless child and his return home will remain burnt into your memory.

Easy read. Well written. Great book.
Shoot the Moon by Billie Letts is a great book. It completely kept my interest from the moment I began reading up until the very end. I couldn't put the book down! I kept trying to predict who killed Nicky Jack's mother. The ending will surprise you. There were many twists and turns in this book to keep you guessing. The characters were believable and interesting in their own way. One thing I didn't like about this book was how rushed it felt at the end. The entire book was dedicated to developing the characters and plot, but so much happens in the last chapter that if you skip a sentence, you might miss something. Overall, this book was fantastic. I read some of the negative reviews beforehand and I still think this book was great. The women in my book club agree. I have not ... Shoot the Moon by Billie Letts is a great book. I have become a Billie letts fan I have now read 4 of her books in the past 2 weeks, this was a page turner, kept you guessing with the mystery of it. I love how the author has I would call signature things in her books, they all mention walmart, her characters names are unusual, and I'v noticed they all have a girl in some way you can relate too. If this is your first Billie lettes book it won't be your last.I have become a Billie letts fan I have now read 4 of her books in the past 2 weeks, this was a page turner, kept you guessing with the mystery of it.
